These numbers for most consumers are nothing more than just that: numbers. Understanding what all of this means will give you a better idea of what to expect when you apply for anything where credit matters. What is considered a bad credit score? Well it depends on what you need it for.

Credit scores are used when you apply for any kind of loan, insurance, rental applications, and in some instances employment. The lower you are on the scale the higher your interest rates will be and in some cases your application will be declined.

The problem with defining what is bad, acceptable, good, excellent, etc is that every financial institution decides this for themselves. Based on their own past experiences and the volume of applications they receive they decide what range of scores mean to them. However, we can get a rough idea of what these numbers generally mean.

If you are below 500 than in all situations you have what is considered a bad credit score. You will be turned down for any loans and your insurance rates will be terrible.

Those who fall between 500 and 600 will still have a hard time, and for the most part you have a bad credit score. You still have high rates and will be turned down for almost all large loans. While you’re in a better situation than you could be, it probably won’t take too much effort to improve this to a more acceptable range.

Those in the low 600s, while they will have a hard time obtaining a decent mortgage, are in a terrible situation; most consider this to be an acceptable number.

As you’ve seen, what is considered a bad credit score is largely subjective but for the best interest rates you’ll want to rise above 700.
